Before You Buy

I understand axolotls can live 10–15 years — this is a long-term commitment I’ve budgeted for a tank, filter, and ongoing food costs, plus possible vet bills I’ve confirmed axolotls are legal to own where I live I have access to a vet who treats exotics/amphibians I’m comfortable feeding live or frozen food (worms, pellets) I’ve read our Axolotl Care Sheet and Before You Get an Axolotl guide

Tank & Equipment

Tank — 20 gallons (long) minimum for one adult Sponge filter and air pump Fine sand or bare-bottom substrate — no gravel Liquid water test kit (not test strips) Dechlorinator / water conditioner Digital thermometer Aquarium chiller, if your home regularly runs above 20°C Hides, plants, and décor with no sharp edges A large net A large plastic tub, for quarantine or fridging if ever needed

Before Bringing One Home

Tank is fully cycled — ammonia and nitrite both read 0 for a full week Water temperature stable between 16–18°C (60–64°F) Food sourced and ready to go Your exotic vet’s contact details are saved somewhere handy

The First 48 Hours

Temperature-acclimated your axolotl using the float method Tank lights dimmed, disturbance kept to a minimum Not worried if it hides or skips its first meal — that’s normal Read our Bringing Home Your Axolotl guide for what to expect
