Axolotl Aquarium Substrate

  •   Hi all, does anyone have experience with using a fine sand as an aquarium substrate? I am told that the best is a silica based sand with <1mm particles to ensure that it does not harm the axolotls if swallowed Is this a better option than larger stones? Could I just leave the bottom bare? ?
    By Saxolotl 7 years ago

  •   If you are going to use large stones you have to ensure the stones are at least twice the size of the Axolotls head. I prefer using sand as its fairly easy to clean and looks the best in my opinion. If you prefer a bare bottom tank then yes for sure you can leave it bare.

  •   Sure, thank you!Do you by any chance gave experience with using normal filter sand? Fine aquarium-grade silica is pretty much impossible for me to find. I have read that if you sterilise it properly it shouldn't be harmful?

  •   @saxolotl I have defiantly used myself and seen other use pool filter sand. As long as it is silica sand it should be ok.

Hoping to get my first axolotl soon, I have questions!

  •   Hi guys! New to the forum and I'm so glad there's a place like this. I have been doing a lot of research reading and watching videos about axolotls, and asking various people for information. But I thought this would be a fantastic place to get some more specific questions answered, so I will list them for them to be easier and more organised. I hope that's okay!1) When cleaning out the tank, I heard it's good to take out the water with a gallon jug. Of course I know not to take out all the water, but when I fill the jug back up to put clean tap water in, how long should I wait to pour it in the tank after putting in some of the conditioner to treat it? Do I pour it in as soon as I've poured it in or wait a certain amount of time?2) When cleaning the tank, is it best to take the axolotl out or to leave it in there? And if I put it in a separate thing, should I still treat that water before putting the little fella in?3) I live in the South of England. Anyone who lives here or knows the temperatures well, do I need to get a fan or chiller? And if I do, do I only need to use it in the summer in the day time/any specific times? Does it make a lot of noise or can you get quiet ones?4) I'm a little confused about filters. I plan to get a 20 gallon tank, and I know the filter needs to have a low flow as to not stress the axolotl out. But I don't know what a good size, brand, model, etc. I should get. I've been looking on Amazon but I've been confused. Can people link or recommend any specific ones? Thank you!5) How often and how much do they need to be fed, and do I need to clean the worms before feeding them to the axolotl? Should I clean them in treated water or is tap water alone fine?6) I heard with some health problems axolotls encounter require salt baths or tea baths. How long should I have the axolotl in there should it happen? And should I put conditioner in to treat the bath before putting the axolotl in?7) Do I ever need to change the sand that goes in the tank? I know about spot cleaning with a turkey baster and about moving the sand around with my hand to get the dirt up and stuff, but does the sand ever need changing? If it does, how do I do it? Sorry this is a bit lengthy, I just want to know everything to make sure I get this right! Thank you everyone! ❤️ ?

  •   I'm thinking of adding some live plants to help with water quality, what would be the best kinds for axolotls?

  •   You can check out that link on our site. Those are some plants that iv used and others around the Axolotl community have used.

  •   I was kinda hoping for something that wasn't in German and Latin...No offense, but I don't really trust something that was obviously copied and pasted without actually being read first. And I was looking for a bit more info than just a list. The whole point of posting here is to avoid having to google a huge list plants to find something.

  •   The list was created by members of the Axolotl-Aholics Facebook group. It's in the Latin names since each country/region may call them by different names.

  •   Personally, in my tanks, i use Java fern, Duckweed, tripartita and polysperma

Breeding

  •   I've got two young axolotls, around 4-5 in., when should I worry about them breeding if I've got one of each gender?
    By chally298 7 years ago

  •   Sexual maturity happens at about the 1 year to year and a half mark on average. If your Axolotls are 4 - 5 inches id say they are still way too young to breed. You still got time before you have to worry about separating them. I'd be more worries once they reach around the 7-inch mark.

  •   That's good to know.

Housing big numbers

  •   hey there! I was wondering how all of you handle housing lots of Lotls while you breed and sell them. My system of shelves and taking over the laundry folding table has worked fine, but as we have more interest and more hatchlings coming, I'm looking for ideas on how to keep some kind of order to a lot of containers. Thanks very much for any advise or pics!
    By Abbys_Axi... 8 years ago

  •   Hey Abby! I raise my little ones in plastic containers. I start off with a couple when they are hatchlings and end up with a dozen or so when they are around 3 inches. I keep them on a 6 level shelf that has a surface area of 6 feet by 3 feet. Each shelf can hold 1,000 pounds. Stacking upwards instead of spreading outwards on the floor or the table is the key to saving space.

  •   Hey Abby, I am from the united states and I was wondering if you have any leucistic axolotl's for sale? I am Located in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. For some reason when I get online to try and purchase one they are all sold out. I would like to know how much it will cost to purchase one with the cost of shipping as well.

  •   hello how often do i have to make water changes and what percentage ? i have two axolotls , a filter for 150 gallons some fake plants and hides and an airstone plus the tank is 112 liters thanks
    By mpakourok... 8 years ago

  •   If you have a 112 liter tank (30 gallons) then the 150 gallon filter is too powerful. It will likely create a heavy water flow and cause a lot of stress to your Axolotl. Good practice would be around 20-25% water change every week, assuming you already have a stable cycle.
